Kurushetra Temples

Brahma Sarovara Tank
This is one of the holiest tanks in all of India. It is said that by bathing in this tank you get the benefit of performing an Ashvamedha-yajna. It is also said that if you bath here during a solar eclipse you are absolved from all sins. It consists of a large lake about a half a km wide and a km long (3,600 by 1,500 feet). The water is very clean, and there are ghats for bathing at regular intervals. It is said that Lord Brahma created the earth here. Krishna, Balarama, and Subhadra came here to bathe during a solar eclipse. One million people come here to bathe at the time of an eclipse.

In the middle of the Sarovara there is a temple of Mahadeva (Shiva) that is linked to the shore by a small bridge.

There is a well on the big island in the middle of the tank called Chandra Kupa, which is one of the four sacred wells in Kurukshetra. There is a temple near this well. After the battle of Kurukshetra, Yudhisthira is said to have erected a victory pillar here.

The area by this tank is very peaceful.

Sannihit Sarovara
This is a holy bathing tank 500m by 150m (1,500 by 450 feet), which is believed to be the meeting point of seven scared Saraswatis. It is said that if you perform sraddha and take bath in this tank on the day of an eclipse all your sins are absolved and you receive the results of doing 1,000 Ashvamedha-yajnas. All the thirthas are said to assemble at this tank on the Amavasya day (new moon day).

This is also a place to do pinda for the deceased, especially if the death was unnatural. It is said that this is the place where Lord Krishna met the gopis and residences of Vrindavana, and that He also bathed in this tank.

There is a temple dedicated to Dhurv Narayana with the deities of Lord Vishnu, Dhruv Bhagat, Hanuman, and goddess Durga on the bank of this tank. On the side of the tank is a Laksmi Narayana temple.

Jyotisar
This is said to be the place where the Gita was spoken. There is a Banyan (Vat) tree that marks the spot where Lord Krishna spoke the Bhagavad-gita and showed His universal form (Virata Rupa) to Arjuna. There is a marble chariot under the tree to mark the spot. The Jyotisar tank here is 325mby 165m(1,000 by 500 feet). There is an old Shiva temple here, which also has a Banyan tree over it.

Jyotisar is located about 8 km west of Brahma Sarovara on Pehowa Road. It is possible to stay here overnight at the Canal Rest House.

Bana Ganga Narkarati (Bhisma Kund)
Bana Ganga is 5 km from Brahma Sarovara on the way to Jyotisar. If you get an auto-rickshaw to Jyotisar, you can see both places at the same time. On the 11th day of the battle of Kurukshetra, Bhisma laid on a bed of arrows and asked for water. Arjuna is said to have pierced the earth with an arrow to quench the thirst of Bhisma.

It is said if you bathe in this tank you receive the benefits of bathing at all the tirthas. Bhisma rested on a bed of arrows until the end of the war, and he then instructed Yudhisthira Maharaja on the path of dharma (religious activities). There is a Deity of Lord Krishna in His Viswarupa form and a huge 26-foot-high Hanuman deity here.

Sri Krishna Museum
On the ground floor of this museum there are many interesting ancient stone carvings and Deities of Krishna or Vishnu. On the next two floors there are many nice paintings of Krishna from all over India. It is a recommended place to visit.

Ban Ganga (Dyalpur)
Arjuna is said to have shot an arrow in the ground here to get water for his horses when he was trying to kill Jayadratha. Jayadratha had helped to kill Arjuna's son Abhimanyu unfairly, so Arjuna had vowed to kill him before the sun set or kill himself. The Kauravas hid Jayadratha to stop Arjuna from fulfilling his vow, so he had to fight extremely hard. His horses were wounded in this battle and needed water. Lord Krishna then bathed the horses and gave them water to quench their thirst from this well. It is a tank 78 by 110 feet about 3 km south of Brahma Sarovara.

 

Sthaneswara Temple

It is said that at the Sthaneswara Mahadeva Temple the Pandavas prayed to Lord Shiva to receive his blessings for victory in the battle at Kurukshetra. The water of the tank next to the temple is said to be very holy. A few drops from this tank are said to have cured King Ban of leprosy.

This temple is located a short distance north of Thanesar town. The Shiva-linga here is ancient.

 

Kamal Nabhi

This is a tank next to the town of Thanesara. It is said that Brahma was born out of a lotus from Lord Vishnu's navel here. There is a Vishnu and Brahma temple here.

It is said if you take bath in the small tank called Apaga Tirtha, located south of the University Campus, it is the same as taking bath at Gaya. People make offerings to their ancestors here.

 

Bhadra Kali Temple

This temple is located near Sthanu Shiva Temple on Jhansa Road. This is said to be the place where the right ankle of Sati fell when Lord Vishnu cut up Sati's body, which was being held by Lord Shiva.

 

Birla Mandir

This is a nice temple by Brahma Sarovara.

Nine of the ten Sikh Gurus came to Kurukshetra. Gurdwara Sidhabati is said to be the place where Guru Nanak stayed when he came to Kurukshetra.

At Pehowa, 27 km west of Brahma Sarovara, King Prithu is said to have done sraddha for his father.

Amin is a large mound about 8 miles from Thanesar, where it is said Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna, was trapped in the Chakra Vyuha.

Karna Vadha is a long trench where the wheels of Karna's chariot got stuck and where Karna was killed.

Soma Tirtha is a pool where Soma is said to have performed sacrifices. In the towns of Jind and Safidon are several tirthas. At Ram Hridaya, near the Jind railway station, Parasurama is said to have performed a sacrifice. Varaha Tirtha, at Birhi Kalan near Jind, is believed to be where Varaha, Lord Vishnu in His boar incarnation, appeared to save the earth. Jamadagni, the father of Parasurama, is believed to have per formed a sacrifice at Pushkar Tirths, which is 5 km from Pindara. Sarp Damam, located in Safidon, is said to be where Janamejaya performed a yajna to destroy all the snakes on earth.

 

ISKCON Temple

There is an ISKCON temple in the town of Thanesar, which is a few km from Brahma Sarovara. It is a small center with helpful devotees, but there is no real guest facilities. It is a near a monument of a man riding a horse, in downtown Thanesar.
