The city of Madras was built up by the British starting in 1639. It was the site of their first settlement in India. The East India Company came here in 1639 and constructed Fort St George by 1641. The Mylapore, Triplicane, and Tiruvottiyur areas of Madras, where the Parthasarathi and Kapaliswara Temples are located, are ancient.
