EKADASI Names & Significance


Ekadashi falls twice in a month on the 11th day of Krishna Paksh and Shukla Paksh. Suklapaksha is from New Moon to Full Moon.
Krishnapaksha is from Full moon to New Moon.

Shri Vishnu honoured ' Ekadashi Tithi" with a place amongst Devis to be known as 'Ekadashi Devi" Ekashadi is also known as ' Haripriya' one who is very dear to Hari (Shri Vishnu) It is said that one should fast on this day and follow 'Brahmacharaya' vrata. One
should take phalaahaar once or three times a day as convenient. One can either have just milk or milk and fruits.

Cereals/anaaj should not be taken on this day. Rice should be avoided on this Ekadashi. If an individual cannot observe this fast on all the Ekashadi's then it is very auspicious to observe a fast on 'Nirjala Ekadashi' which falls in the Shukla Paksh in the month of Jyeshta ( June) Many people observe the Ekadashi fast for a period of One year for the departed souls of loved ones as it is suppose to bring peace for them. If one keeps this fast for a long period of time you can do an 'Udyaapan' after consulting a priest.
