GANESHA AND 'OM'

The sound symbol 'OM' of the Absolute is said to be the form of Ganesha. 'OM' is the Pranava Nadam, the Anahatha vibration and the name Ganesha, a modified form of Kanesha meaning the lord of sound, is most appropriate for this Deity. This concept is beyond the comprehension of ordinary undeveloped minds.

These two symbol letters one in Tamil and the other in Sanskrit resemble the profile of the head of an elephant which is adopted by Ganesha for this head. This can be made out in Ganesha figures with trunks turning towards right and for this reason such figures go by the name of 'Omkara Ganapathy"

A similar process of formation of a symbol letter appears to have been followed in the Hebrew language. No language is possible without the sound element 'A' or 'Akara'. So it forms the first letter in all languages. In Hebrew the first letter is 'Aleph'. Aleph is the semitic name for a bull which was considered as a sacred animal in all ancient countries. Obviously, the first letter in Hebrew 'Aleph' was formed in honour of this sacred animal. The origin of the present English letter 'A' which is in the shape of the inverted head of a bull can be traced to this Hebrew origin. Perhaps, John Bull the nick--name of the English men may be an inheritance from the Hebrew through this alphabetical source.

A sage by name Akathisan (God within) popularly known as Agasthyar is said to have brought the prevedic cult of yoga down to the south when the Aryan invaders drove away the original desis (natives of the soil). Sage Agasthyar maintained and kept up the high traditions of the Tamil language and culture and so he is considered as the patron sage of Tamil Language. The Tamil form of writing 'OM' which was also adopted by the Sanskrit was invented by this sage.
