Sardar
Shri Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India, who was much grieved
on seeing the ruins of the old Somnath Temple took a pledge
on November 13, 1947, on the sea-shore nearby, to reconstruct
the Temple. This pledge was realised when Dr. Rajendra Prasad,
the first President of India, performed the Pran-Pratishtha Ceremony
of the Jyotirlinga on May 11, 1951 in the Garbh - Gruh
of the Somnath Temple which was being reconstructed at that time.
The vast gathering of the people greeted this happy and historic
occasion with joyous cries of "Jay Somnath" which expressed
their unassailable faith and devotion.
To
commemorate this great event, Shree somnath Trust is celebrating
the whole year from May 11, 2000 to May 11, 2001 as Shree
Somnath Jyotirling Pran-Pratistha Golden Jubilee Year.
The inaugural functions like Mahabhishek - Mahapooja, Sahasra
Deep Arti, Shobhayatra of Lord Somnath, Sant
- Padarpan on the newly constructed Pradakshina
Path, inauguration of Illumination of
the Temple and inauguration of the Golden Jubilee day and
the Golden Jubilee Year celebrations were held from
May 8 to May 13, 2000. A commemorative publication"Yugvarti
Punarnirman"and Golden Jubilee Web-Page on the Somnath website
were also released.
Installation
of idols of deities - Ganesh
and Hanuman, in the extended portion of the
Ahalyabai Temple; Atirudra Yagna; Plantation of Bilva Van; Bhoomi
Pujans for Morarji Desai Ghat, Sankirtan Hall and Krishna Moksha
Dham; Inauguration of "Sound and Light" of the Somnath Temple;
grand Maha Shivratri celebration, as well as Dance and Music
festivals; Presentation of Shivnam Pothis to
Lord Somnath; Historians' meet on Sardar and Somnath and
Purnahuti of the Suvarnajayanti Mahotsav on May 11, 2001, are
other major programmes, which from part of the year - round
celebrations of the Golden Jubilee of Shree
Somnath Jyotirlinga Pran - Pratishtha.
