Jai Maa Durga

No sooner did the demon army reach Heaven than Lord Indra seated on his mighty elephant Airavat came out of his capital Amravati at the head of a strong army of gods to give battle to Mahisha.

The whole sky resounded with the wild trumpets of Airavat elephant. Lord Indra warned Mahisha, "Stand still where you are if you value your life! Stupid demon, I have defeated you a number of times. But you are too obstinate."

Mahisha roared, "Foolish Indra ! Bridle your tongue and fight!"

Being enraged, Indra launched a massive attack on the demon with his mighty weapon Vajra. A terrible battle was fought between the Gods and the demons. The battle-field was flooded with blood. Heads rolled on the earth. Dead and mutilated bodies lay here, there and everywhere.

But at last the Gods had to flee the battle field. The demoniac forces had defeated and routed them completely.

Now Mahisha was the unquestioned master of Heaven!

His joy knew no bounds. Mahisha, the demon king, was now seated on Indra's throne.

He boasted and said, "Since I sit on the throne of Indra, I am the lord of all the Gods. I ordain all shall now worship me alone! No one shall worship either Brahma, Vishnu or Mahesha! I am omnipotent."

So Mahisha's soldiers let loose a reign of tyranny and torture. All the saints and sages who were discovered worshipping Shiva or Vishnu were lashed violently to death. Many devotees were beheaded.

A reign of terror prevailed in Heaven. A devotee of God could lose his life at any moment.

The Shiva Lingas were removed from the temples and idols of Mahisha were placed. Heaven had turned into a Hell.

Mahisha was now being worshipped everywhere. The devilish forces had their say. The divine forces were under a cloud. It was the right time for the Manifestation of the Supreme!
