The Mysterious

Vena the wise, has seen the Supreme, hidden in the secret cave, wherein all things assume one single form. This, the cause of all spendour, has been milked through things created and the homage paid by heaven knowing men.

May the immortal knowing Gandharvas, reveal that highest hidden, three-quarters of which lie in secret. He who knoweth them shall be the sire's sire.

He, the generator and father of us all, is also our brother. he the knower of all the abodes, all the beings, who is the sole nomenclator of the gods, of him all beings enquire and desire to attain.

To earth and heaven I have been, I approached the first-born of righteousness, abiding in all beings as speech in the speaker, all-pervading, nourisher is he, is he not Agni?

I went around all the abodes and found there the web of righteousness stretched out, where the gods having attained immortality enjoyed themselves in the same place of union.

To Gandharvas

The divine Gandharva, the lord of all beings and Universe, the only one worthy to receive homage, to be praised among the subjects, thee being such I meet you through the incantation. O divine God, obeisance to thee, thou abides in all.

Sky-touching, worship-worthy, sun-skinned, remover of the seizure of gods, the Gandharva is gracious to all. He who is of lord beings, the only one worthy to receive homage, is very propitious.

The Gandharva united himself with the irreproachable ones. He was among the Apsaras. In the ocean is, I am told, their abode, whence they come and go away.

O ye divine Apsaras who dwell in the sky, lightning and in stars, and accompany the Gandharva Vishwavasu, to you I do pay my homage.

They who invoke, fulfil the desires, baffle the mind and arouse interest in the best activities, the divine Apsaras, who have Gandharvas as their consorts, I do pay homage.

For Relief from Excessive Discharges

The yonder spring-water that runs down the mountain, that do I make for thee a remedy, that thou mayest contain a good remedy.

The Asuras have buried deep down this great healer of wounds, that is the remedy of discharges, that has removed the disease.

The ants bring out the remedy from the sea, that is the remedy of discharges, that has removed the disease.

Weal be to us the Waters, propitious be herbs to us. May Indra's bolt smite the Rakshashas, far away from us shall the arrows shot by demons fall!

Charm with an Amulet

For longevity and great joy, we, doing no harm, ever vigorous bear this amulet, the remover of obstacles, praise-worthy and destroyer of ailments.

Let this amulet of a thousand virtues, protect us on all sides from convulsions, from acute pain, from violence, from obstacles and from bereavement.

Witchcraft destroyerer is this amulet, similarly it destroys the hostile powers. May this powerful fangidam amulet prolong our life-span.

Prayer to Indra

O Indra, be pleased, fare forward and come to us, O hero, on thy tow bay steeds. Come fair one, drink of the pressed out Soma draught, the sweet intoxicant.

Indra, thou a swiftly overcoming friend slew Vritra, spilt Vala, defeat the violent foes like Bhrigu, the wise, in the intoxication of Soma juice.

Now will I proclaim the heroic exploits of Indra, the thunder-armed, who slew the Dragon Ahi, disclosed the waters and rent the channels of the mountains.

He slew the Dragon lying on the mountain, his divine thunderbolt was fashioned by Tvastar, like lowing kine in speedy flow the descending waters rushed to the ocean.

Impetuous like a bull, he chose Soma, and in three sacred beakers he drank of it, then Maghavan grasping his missile thunderbolt, slew the first-born of the dragons.

In Praise of Agni

O Agni, may the favourable seasons, summers, the years, the seers and the things that are true, increase thee. Shine thou with thy bright, beautiful flames and illumine well the four quarters.

Be well kindled, O Agni, and do thou prosper this man, and arise to great good for fortune. O Agni, let not thy devotees suffer, let thy worshippers be famed, and not others.

O Agni, these Brahmins learned in the Vedas, choose thee, be gracious to us in our sacrifice. Be thou, O Agni, the slayer of the foes, conqueror of the hostile people, and keep a watch unremittingly over thine own household.

Charm Against Curses

This god-born herb, hated by the wicked, this curse removing herb has washed away all curses from me, as waters do a foul spot.

The curse of the rival and that from kinswoman, the curse that a Brahmin in fury shall utter, all that be under our feet.

From the sky its root is suspended. From the earth it rises up, with it that has a thousand shoots do thou protect us on all sides.

Protect me, protect my progeny, protect our wealth, let not malice overcome us, let not hostile plots overcome us!

Let the curse go to the curser, our dealings are with him who is friendly. Of the enemy who bewitches with his eye we crush the ribs.
