Brahm Vidya

The Sacred Word that was first born of old in the East, the Sun has revealed from the well-shining horizon. He has disclosed various shapes of it, the womb of the existent and of the non-existent.

Let this Queen of ancestors, who pervedes all beings come forth towards the primordeal creation. For her have I sent this brilliant sunbird. Let them offer the hot drink for the first thirsty one.

The wise who was born with the knowledge of the world's secret thread, reveals the birth of all the gods. He brought forth the word from the midst of the word. Downward, upward, he dwells in his own laws.

He, according to the Cosmic Law, fixed as his abode the heaven and the earth, the two great firmaments, the mighty one by birth, fixed apart the mighty heaven and earth as his seat.

He from his birth has attained the summit, the universal lord, the master of the sacred word. His divinity is like the shining day born of light, so let the shining singers be luminous far and wide.

Verily doth the poet's wisdom increase the glory of him, the great god of ancient. He was born together with many, they were sleeping when the eastern hemisphere was unclosed.

Whoever approaches our father Atharvan with homage, and Brihaspati, the friend of the gods, shall generate all, a poet, a god not to be harmed, self-ruled.

What God May We Adore

Giver of the soul, strength and vigour, he whose instructions all the gods obey, the lord of these bipeds and quadrupeds. What god shall we adore with our oblation?

He who by his grandeur bath become the sole king of the breathing, winking and the moving world, of whom immoratality and death are the shadow. What god shall we adore with our oblation?

He whom the two spheres favoured when fixed, whom the terrified firmaments called upon; whose is you divine road, the Traverser of the heavens. What God shall be adored with our oblation?

The mighty waters in the beginning came containing the universal germ, they immortal, law making ones over whom, divine ones, the God was. What God shall we adore with our oblation?

The golden embryo was evolved from the floods. It was when born, the sole lord of existence and none beside him. What God shall we adore with our oblation?

Charm Against Wild Beasts

Form here have gone away the three-the tiger, man and wold. Out of sight go the rivers, out of sight go the divine forest tree, out of sight the foes shall retreat.

May the wolf tread a distant path, and the robber still more distant one. On a distant path shall move the snake, on a distant path may the malignant walk.

Both the two eyes and thy jaw be crushed, O tiger, and also thy twenty claws.

The tiger, the foremost of animals, armed with teeth do we crush, then the snake, and then the serpent, the sorcerer and then also the wolf.

What thief comes today, he shall go away crushed. He shall by the falling off roads, may Indra slay him with his thunderbolt.

For Promoting Verility

Thee, that the Gandharva dug up for Varuna when his verility was dead, thee that causest strength, we dig up.

The Dawn, the sun and these words of incantation of mine, the bull Prajapati shall with vigorous energy arouse him.

This plant shall make you so full of manly vigour, that thou shalt, when thou are excited exhale a heat as a thing heated.

The energies of the herbs, the essence of the bulls shall arouse him. Do thou Indra, self controller put together in him, the verility in men.

Thou art O herb, the first born sap of the waters and the plants. Moreover, thou art also Soma's brother, also thou art verility of the stag.

Now O Agni, now O Savitar, now O goddess Saraswati, now Brahmanaspati do thou make his member taut like bow.

A Charm for sleep

The thousand-horned bull that came out of the sea with the aid of him, the powerful one, do we put the people to sleep.

The wind blows not over the earth, no one looks on its, both all the women and the dogs, do thou make to sleep, going with Indra as his friend.

The women that are lying on beds, on couches, lying in litters, the women that breathe out sweet fragrance do we all of them put to sleep.

Whatever moves have I seized, Eyes and breath I have held fast, all the limbs have I seized, in the deep depth of the night.

Of him who sits and him who walks, of him who stands and look about, of them we make the eyes shut, just as these habitations are shut.

May the mother sleep, the father sleep, the dog sleep, the lord of the house sleep, may all her relations sleep and may all these he put round about sleep.

O sleep, do thou put to sleep all the folk with the magic that induces sleep.

Make the others sleep, till the sun rises, may I be awake till dawn, like Indra unharmed, inexhausted.

Charm Against Poison

The Brahman was born first with ten heads and ten mouths, he first drank the Soma, that made the poison powerless.

As great as are heaven and earth in expanse, as far as the seven rivers spread out, so far from here have I proclaimed these words which destroy poison.

The winged eagle consumed the first, O poison, thou did not bewilder him, thou did not injure him and thou turned into a drink for him.

He of five-fingered hand that did hurl at thee from some curved bow, from the tip of the rearing arrow have I charmed away the poison.

From the tip of the arrow have I charmed away the poison, from the annointing that has been put upon it an also from its feathers. Form its barbed horn, the neck have I charmed away the poison.

Powerless, O arrow, is thy tip, powerless us thy poison, also powerless is the bowl of a powerless wood, O powerless arrow.
