Yoga
is a prevedic cult with a personal inner approach to solve the spiritual
problems of life. This is different from the Vedic Cult of Yaga with either
a collective or individual and even a vicarious approach of overt ritualism
hoping to solve the same problems. In Yaga, there is recital of Mantras.
In Yoga, there is only Ajapa (non-recital) contemplation. Yoga is a Dravidian
Cult. But it is believed by some scholars that Shiva, the Lord of Yoga,
was propitiated by the worship of his idol or his symbol, the Linga, and
it was the Dravidian who introduced Idol worship. This belief is inconsistent
with the ideal of Yoga. The Holy Cross is a Christian symbol. Any sanctity
shown to this symbol will not amount to a worship of God which is as enjoined
by christian doctrine, to be in spirit and in truth. Bible in the genesis
chapter mentions that Jacob set up a pillar as a symbol of God's house
and poured oil on it. Any respect shown to this pillar will not amount
to the worship of Jehovah. Similarly the pillars (lingas) and the imaginary
figure of Shiva personified as a yogi excavated from the Indus Valley
should be considered only as religious symbols. Any sanctity shown to
these symbols and images is neither worship of Shiva nor the practice
of Yoga. The meaning of Shiva Linga has to be understood in the light
of the revelation of St. John "Him that overcometh will I make be noted
that Shiva is called Sthanu, a word derived from thoon meaning pillar,
in Dravidian Tamil.
It may be noted that Thera, the father of Abraham was a manufacturer of
idols and linga pillars and Abraham, the grand-father of Jacob, was
worshipping a God by name El-Shaddai, a mountain-God along with his symbol,
the linga pillar. El-Shaddai looks like another name for Shiva, the God
of Mount Kailas known among his original Dravidian devotees as Shaddayan
and Shaddayappan. Shaddama or jaddam means body or basic matter and the
names El-Shaddai, Shaddayan and Shaddayappan mean, the God who energises
the body or basic matter with life. Abraham is said to have consecrated
a grove (Pillar) at Beer-she-Ba in honour of his God before he crossed
over to Egypt. The worship of El-Shaddai continued until the name was
replaced by Moses by the name of 'Y H W H' rendered in English as Jehovah. |
