Succinctly
stated the story is as follows:
Parvathy the great Goddess annoyed at the too many intrusions of her consort
Shiva, into her private apartments in her place at Kailas posted the bull
headed Nandi an attendant of Shiva at the gate with strict instructions
not to let any body in, without her permission. A little later Siva came
there but Nandi not being bold enough to prevent the entry of his master,
let him in. Parvathy though courteous to her Lord was furious at Nandi
for violating her instructions. Shiva got amused at her annoyance and
left the place to allow things to settle down. Parvathy decided to have
her own attendant who could obey her orders, come what may. She collected
all the scented unguent from her body and by will of her own mind created
a boy. She looked at him and was pleased to see him strong and handsome.
She hugged him as her own son and presenting him with a staff posted him
at her palace gate with instruction to let no one in without her permission.
A few moments later Shiva came at the gate with his attendants and attempted
to get in. The boy cried halt. Shiva got furious at the effrontery of
the boy and pushed him out of his way. The boy dealt a heavy blow on Shiva
with his staff and the situation became very awkward. Shiva's attendants
also were bewildered. Shiva on second thought decided to leave the place
discreetly instructing his attendants to remove the impudent boy standing
guard at the gate.
After Shiva left the place his attendants
headed by Nandi made several attacks on the boy who with his staff repulsed
every attack and finally put them all to flight. Brahma, Vishnu and Indra
who knew about this commotion at the palace gate of Parvathy wanted to
prevent any estrangement between Shiva and Pravathy which would affect
the entire universe. They hastened to Shiva and offered their humble services
as mediators between him and his consort. Shiva accepting their offer
asked Brahma first to go to the boy standing guard at the gate and put
some sense into his head. Brahma went to the boy but found him adamant.
The boy told Brahma that he would not allow any one in, not even Shiva,
without his mother's permission. |
