In
Biblical accounts the serpents are not represented as evil creatures.
It was God's hand that formed them. One of the fallen angels assumed the
form of a serpent to induce confidence in Eve and worked havoc for humanity
by inducing her (Eve) the mother of humanity, to eat the fruit of the
forbidden tree.
It may be noted that the serpent did not
do any harm to mother (Avvai). It was the Satan in the garb of the serpent
who did the harm. The serpents of the Bible are to be considered only
as symbol of mental qualities which could produce both good and evil.
Jesus Christ scolded the pharisees as "Ye Serpents, the generation of
vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell". They should not be identified
with Satan nicknamed as 'Old Serpent', the destructive principle of life.
"Do evil" is the devil. Ill done to Eve is the evil and the doer of this
evil has become the devil.
The head of the elephant and the inveiglement of the serpent in an integrated
form appear to be a phase in the evolution of the figure of Ganesha as
is seen in the piece of sculptures containing the figure of a man with
the head of an elephant holding among other features, the tail of a serpent,
preserved in Paris Museum.
Ganesha has yet to acquire his mount the mouse. |
