Sundari Temple is situated in the ancient Udaipur, believed to be one of the holiest Hindu shrines in this part of the country. Popularly known as Matabari, crowns in a small hillock and is served by the red-robed priests who traditionally, minister to the mother goddess. Considered to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, consists of a square type sanctum of the typical Bengali hut. It was constructed by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya Debbarma in 1501 A.D., there are two identical images of the same deity inside the temple named Chhotima, one is around 2 feet in height and the other about 5 feet in height.
History
It is known that the temple was first constructed by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 1501 A. D. It was repaired by Maharaja Rama Manikya in 1681 A D, when it was damaged by lightning and again by Maharaja Radhakishore Manikya during the beginning of this century. In the Eastern side of the temple there is the famous Kalyan Sagar where fishes and tortoises of huge size are found and devotees feed them with puffed rice (Muri) and biscuits. The lake with High Jet fountain set in front of the temple simply adds to its beauty. No fishing is permitted in Kalyan Sagar.
How To Reach
By Air: The closest airport is at Agartala, from where you can easily reach the temple by road. Udaipur is well connected to Agartala, which is connected to the rest of India.
By Train: The nearest rail head is Kumarghat on N. E. Railway. It is 1475 km from Kolkata via Guwahati and 140 km from Agartala. From here you can pick a bus or taxi to reach the temple.
By Road:The Temple is situated close to the capital city of Agartala in Tripura, which is well linked to this place by road. NH 44 connects the state with many north eastern states by road. Agartala, the capital of Tripura, is connected by regular bus services with all sub-divisional towns of Tripura. Besides, bus service is also available from Silchar, Guwahati, Karimganj and Shillong.
