Avighna vrata was observed by Shiva before killing the demon Tripurasura and by the sage Agastya before drinking up the ocean. Chaturthi tithi in the month of Falguna is the time when incantations have to be addressed to Ganesha as part of the vrata. On the panchami that follows, a golden image of Ganesha has to be worshipped with thickened milk, sesame seeds and flowers, and donated to worthy brahmanas. This vrata removes all obstacles from one’s path.

Kama vrata is associated with panchami tithi in the month of Pousha, during shuklapaksha. Skanda is worshipped. The first person to observe this vrata was King Nala.

Shanti vrata is associated with panchami tithi during shuklapaksha and in the month of Kartika. This rite frees the devotee from all family discord. As part of the vrata, one has to give up all hot food for the space of one year. And a golden image of the great snake Shesha has to be donated at the conclusion of the vrata.

Arogya vrata enabled King Anaranya to get rid of the leprosy that he had been cursed with.Putreshti vrata enabled King Shurasena to obtain a son. In this vrata one has to feed milk and yoghurt to brahmanas and think of the young Krishna playing in Yashoda’s lap.
