Varahakshetra is very holy because that is the place where Varaha rescued the earth from the water. Chakratirtha is in the same neighbourhood and one who meditates there is born into a noble family. Somatirtha is not very far off. There, Chandra meditated and attained the power to yield soma. In treta yuga, Somadatta, the prince of Kampilya, shot a vixen in Varahakshetra. (He had mistaken the vixen for a deer.) So holy was the tirtha that the vixen which died there was born as the princess of Kashi in its next birth. Somadatta also shot a vulture in Varahakshetra and the vulture was subsequently born as the prince of Kalinga. In yet another case, a bird died in Varahakshetra and was subsequently reborn into a rich and respected vaishya family.
Akhetaka and Gridhavata are two tirthas that are near Varahakshetra. People who die there get to live in Indraloka, or Indra’s abode in heaven.
Vaivasvata is a holy place where the sun-god meditated for a thousand years. A person who visits Vaivasvata tirtha does not have to visit Yama after his death. Vishnu is always present in Kokamukha tirtha. Vadarikasharma is near Kokamukha and is in the Himalayas. It contains Brahmakunda, in whose snows, Vishnu always resides. Only the righteous can hope to reach Vadarikashrama.
