Mathura
Vishnu’s favourite tirtha is however Mathura and the Varaha Purana describes the glory of Mathura at great length.
Vishnu incarnated himself as Krishna in Mathura. In that sense, it is the abode of Vishnu. Its holiness is greater than that of naimisharanya, Prayaga, Pushkara and even Varnasi. Vinduka, Vishranti and Kampilya are important places in Mathura. A barber who lived in Kampilya bathed in the Yamuna and was born as a brahmana in his next life.
A cruel and low-caste hunter used to live in Naimisharanya. On chaturadashi tithi, he went to Mathura and decided to bathe in the Yamuna. He drowned in the river and was reborn as the kshatriya king yakshmadhanu of Sourashtra. He ruled for seventy years and had many queens, seven sons and five daughters.
