There are several other holy spots in Mathura.

Govardhana is to the west of Mathura. It bears an image of the boar incarnation, known as Kapilavaraha. This image was first constructed by the sage Kapila. From Kapila, the image passedon to Indra. Ravana, the kind of Lanka, defeated Indra and obtained the image. It was next acquired by Rama after he defeated Ravana. Rama’s brother, Shatrughna, was despatched by Rama to suppress a demon named Lavana who was causing havoc to Mathura. Having disposed of Lavana, Shatrughna asked for the image as a reward and instated it in Mathura. Worshipping the Kapilavaraha image is far better than worshipping at many other minor tirathas.

Shakratirtha is near Govardhana an is associated with the story of how Krishna humbled Indra. The inhabitants of Mathura had been in the habit of worshipping Indra. Krishna advised them to stop paying homage to Indra. In retaliation, Indra threatened to flood Mathura with rain and Krishna held aloft the Govardhana mountain and protected the inhabitants. (Shakra is another name for Indra. This story is recounted in several Puranas, such as the Vishnu Purrana and the Brahmavaivarta Purana. The incident did not however take place in Mathura itself.)
