Clouds of incense represented the dusk, and handfuls of red powder that flew through the air represented the reddish light of sunset. The heaps of jewels that gleamed on house-tops looked like so many stars and the dome of the royal palace appeared to be the brilliant moon.


The sweet sound of Vedic recitation in the palace resembled the chirping of birds appropriate to the occasion. Beholding this spectacle, the sun forgot to move, a whole month passed without his knowing it.


The day assumed the length of a month, but no one observed the mystery. The sun stood motionless in his chariot; then how could there be night?


No one noticed this mystery; the sun at last moved on, singing the praises of Rama as he went. After watching the great festival the goods, sages and Nagas returned to their several homes, congratulating themselves on their good fortune.


I tell you another secret that concerns myself; listen to it, O Girija, for I know your steadfast faith. Kakabhushundi and I both were there together in human form so that no one could recognize us.


Elated with supreme joy and affectionate delight we roamed about the streets in ecstatic unconsciousness. He alone who enjoyed Rama’s grace can comprehend this blessed experience.


On that occasion the king granted the desire of everyone’s heart, in whatever manner one came. He bestowed elephants, chariots, horses, gold, cows, diamonds and all kinds of raiment.
