Rama and Lakshmana accompanied the sage and came to the bank of the world-purifying Ganga. The son of Gaadhi, Vishvamitra, related the whole story of how the celestial stream came to earth.

The lord then bathed with the sages, and the Brahmans received gifts of various kinds. Accompanied by a company of sages the Lord gladly went on and soon drew near to the city of Videha, Janakpur.

When Rama beheld the beauty of the city, he and his younger brother were much delighted. There were many big and small wells, rivers and tanks with water as sweet as nectar and jewelled steps.

Bees, drunk with honey, made a sweet humming sound and birds of varied plumage softly cooed. Lotuses of many hues blossomed, and a cool, soft and fragrant breeze ever delighted the soul.

On all sides of the city were lovely flower-gardens, orchards and groves, the haunt of innumerable birds, full of flowers and fruits and beauteous leaves.

Inexpressibly beautiful was the city (of Janakpur); go where one might, the soul was captivated. Splendid markets and wondrous balconies all studded with jewels, as though Brahma had fashioned them with his own hands, were there.

Thriving bankers and traders, very Kuberas of wealth, sat with all their various goods displayed. Fine squares and well-planned streets were constantly sprinkled with fragrant waters.
