In diverse ways Rama instructed him, telling him of the birth of Parvati. The Lord in his infinite compassion narrated at full length the most virtuous deeds of Parvati.

‘Now, Shiva’ he said, ‘if you have any affection for me, listen to my prayer. Go and wed Parvati (the daughter of Himachala) and do as I ask you’.

Shiva replied, ‘Although this be not fitting, yet a master’s request cannot be set aside at the same time. My lord, your will must be respectfully done: this is my paramount duty.

The words of one’s parents, guru and master must be obeyed as conducive to bliss without a moment’s thought. You are my supreme benefactor in every way; therefore, my lord, I obey your commands’.

The Lord was well content when he heard the well-chosen words of Shankara, which were instinct with devotion, wisdom and piety, and said, ‘Your vow, Hara, has been accomplished; now bear in mind what I have said’.

So saying he vanished, but the vision of his form remained impressed in Shiva’s heart. That very moment the Seven Seers called on Shiva. The Lord addressed them in most charming accents:

‘Go you to Parvati, and put her love to the test; then send her father, Himalaya, to her and have her brought back home and dispel her doubts’.
