The fun lasted for an hour or so until Kamadeva approached Shambhu. He trembled at the sight of Shiva, and the whole world returned to itself (i.e. regained its normal state).


All creatures regained their peace at once, like drunkards when they feel relieved after the spell of drunkenness is over. Mama was struck with terror at the sight of Rudra (Shiva), who is so difficult to conquer and so hard to comprehend.


He was ashamed to return, yet could hardly do anything. Then, resolving to die, he devised a plan. Forthwith he manifested the lusty spring, king of seasons, and rows of fresh young trees into lovely blossom.


Wood and grove, well and pond and all the quarters of heaven took on a most wondrous beauty. Everywhere nature overflowed with love, as it were; and the slight aroused passion even in dead souls.


Kamadeva woke to life even in dead souls; the beauty of the forest beggared description. Cool, gentle and fragrant winds fanned the fire of passion as a faithful companion. Rows of lotuses opened on the lakes, where swarms of bees hummed sweetly, swans, cuckoos and parrots uttered their sweet notes and celestial maidens sang and danced.


Though Kamadeva tried every trick in a myriad ways, he and his army were defeated. Shiva’s trance was undisturbed, which made Cupid furious.


Seeing the beautiful bough of a mango tree, Kama climbed up into it in a mood of frustration. He fitted his five arrows to his bow of flowers, and casting an angry look drew the bowstring to the ear.
