That the shadow of that madness pursues you to this day-hearken to his exploits that heal the disease of delusion. I shall relate to you all the sportive deeds done by the Lord in that incarnation, according to the measure of my ability.

Hearing Shankara’s words, O Bharadvaja, (says Yajnavalkya) Uma was embarrased and smiled affectionately. Shiva (who has a bull blazoned on his banner) then began to relate the cause of the Lord’s incarnation on that particular occasion.

I proceed to tell you all about it, O great sage; listen attentively. The story of Rama cleanses all the impurities of the Kaliyuga, brings blessings and is most charming.

Svayambhuva Manu and Shatarupa, of whom was born the peerless human race, were a wedded pair, perfect in virtuous conduct, whose rectitude the Vedas sing even to this day.

Their son was King Uttanapada, who begot Hari’s celebrated devotee, Dhruva. Manu’s younger son was known as Priyavrata, who is exalted in the Vedas and the Puranas.

They had a daughter, Devahuti by name who was the favourite consort of the sage Kardama, and who bore in her womb the all-powerful and benevolent Kapila, the Primal Divinity, lord of grace and compassion.

He it was who openly expounded the philosophy of Sankhya, Kapila the blessed, skilled in the analysis of ultimate principles. That Manu ruled for a long period and upheld the Lord'’ commandments in every way.
