After cooking the flesh of a great variety of animals, the wretch mingled with it the cooked flesh of Brahmans. All the invited Brahmans were then summoned to the feast; their feet were duly washed and they were courteously shown to their places.


But the moment the king began to serve the food, a voice came from heaven, “Arise, arise, all ye Brahmans, and return to your home; eat not the food; it forebodes evil!


They have cooked the flesh of Brahmans!’ Up rose all the Brahmans, believing the heavenly voice. The king was distraught; but delusion had deprived him of his senses; overmastered by fate, he could not utter word.


Then exclaimed the Brahmans in their hasty temper – they did not think before speaking. “Go, foolish king, and be born in demon’s form, you and all your family!


Vile Kshatriya, you invited the Brahmans and their families simply to ruin them, but God has preserved our caste sanctity; it is you and your race who will be undone!


In the course of a year you shall perish, and not a soul shall be there in your house to offer libations to your spirit!’ When the king heard the curse, he was sore stricken with fear. Again a gracious voice was heard from heaven.


“O ye Brahmans, you have uttered this curse without due reflection; the king has committed no offence!” All the Brahmans were astounded when they heard the heavenly voice. The king has hastened to the kitchen.
