(Said Shiva-) Brahma and I granted him his boon, saying, “So be it, for you have done great penance”. Then the Lord approached Kumbhakarna and was astonished to see his appearance.

Brahma said to himself, “Should this wretch have his daily repast, the whole world will be laid waste”. So Brahma directed Sharada to turn his head, so that he asked for six months of sleep.

Last of all Brahma went to Vibhishana and said, “Ask a boon, my son”. He asked for pure love for the lotus feet of the Lord.

Having granted them these boons Brahma went away, and they returned to their own home rejoicing. Now Maya had a daughter, Mandodari by name, exceedingly beautiful, a jewel of womankind.

Maya brought and made her over to Ravana, well aware that he would be the lord of the demons. Delighted at having won so lovely a wife, Ravana next went and married off his two brothers.

In the middle of a certain ocean there was a three-peaked mountain called Trikuta, brought into being by Brahma and most difficult of access. The demon Maya (who was a great magician and architect) renovated it. There were countless golden palaces there, all set with jewels.

It was even more splendid and charming than Bhogavati, the city of the race of serpents, and Amaravati, the capital of Indra (the lord of Paradise). It was known throughout the world by the name of Lanka.
