When Kumbhakarna realized that the demon army had been blotted out in an instant, the formidable hero was beside himself with rage and uttered a grim roar like that of a lion.


In his fury, he rooted up mountains and hurled them upon the gallant monkey warriors. The Lord saw the huge mountains coming and with his arrows shattered them into dust.


Raghunatha, Stung with fiery indignation, once more pulled the string of his bow and let fly a volley of arrows all exceeding fierce. The arrows sank into Kumbhakarna’s body and came out again like flashes of lightning disappearing into a cloud.


The blood gushing out from his black frame looked like streams of red ochre issuing from a mountain of soot. Perceiving his discomfiture, the bears and monkeys dashed forward, but the monster laughed when the monkeys drew near.


He burst into a loud roar and, seizing millions and millions of the monkeys, dashed them to the ground like a huge elephant, swearing by the name of Ravana the while.


The hosts of bears and monkeys beat a hasty retreat like a flock of sheep at the sight of a wolf. The monkeys and bears, O Bhavani, turned tall in terror, uttering a piteous cry:


‘This demon is like a famine that threatens to devastate the land of the monkey race. O Rama, slayer of Khara, rain-cloud of compassion, O protect us of the suppliants’ agony, protect us!’
