They struck, they hacked, they clutched, they overthrew; they smashed their skulls and used them as missiles; they ripped up their bellies and plucked up their arms and, seizing the warriors by the foot, dashed them to the ground.

The bears buried the demon warriors in the earth and piled upon them large heaps of sand. The sturdy monkeys raging in the fight looked like so many wrathful Deaths.

With their bodies streaming with blood, the monkeys stood forth like so many raging Deaths. Crushing the demon host, their mighty warriors roared like thunder-clouds. They slapped them and browbeat them; they tore them with the teeth and trod them underfoot. The monkeys and bears sent out a shrill cry and employed strength and stratagem alike to annihilate the miscreant host.

They seized and tore open their cheeks, rent their breasts asunder and hung the entrails round their necks, as though the lord of Prahlada (Nrisimha) had assumed a multiplicity of forms and was sporting on the field of battle. ‘Seize! Smite! Bite! Knock down!’ were the fearsome cries with which heaven and earth resounded. Glory to Rama, who indeed can convert a blade of grass into a thunderbolt and a thunderbolt into a blade of grass!

When Ravana of the Ten Heads saw his troops breaking, he mounted his chariot, and drawing ten bows in his twenty arms marched on, bellowing commandingly, ‘Turn! Turn!’

In wild fury Ravana rushed forth, and the monkeys hurried to confront him, shouting defiance. They seized trees and stones and rocks in their hands and hurled them upon his all at once.

But as soon as the masses of stone struck his body, sturdy as the thunderbolt, the rocks immediately broke into pieces, while Ravana flinched not, but stood firm as a rock and stayed his chariot motionless, maddened with battle fury and boiling in anger.
