Jai Maa Durga

Mahisha was red with rage when he saw his army being destroyed ruthlessly by Durga. He uttered a great roar and muttered, "I am going to kill this woman along with her army in the twinkling of an eye without any more delay."

Mahisha was an adept in creating illusions. He at once gave up his real form and assumed the shape of a mighty buffalo. He pounced at Durga roaring violently. Many of Durga's soldiers were crushed to death under his heels and hoofs. Many were killed by the swirling of his powerful tail. The mighty wind storming out of his wide nostrils, threw down many of Durga's soldiers to the earth. Having killed the Ganas (soldiers), Mahisha pounced upon Durga's lion to kill it. Now the enraged Durga threw her mighty rope round his neck to capture him.

But even then he kept on lifting hillocks on his sturdy horns and hurled them at Durga. He caused ruptures and breaches in the earth. The earth began to sink under the mighty waves of the oceans. Durga was simply playing with this beast of a demon. She at once tightened the noose round his neck. Mahisha felt choked and strangulated.

Mahish tried his best to free himself from the noose of the strong rope which Durga had swung round his neck. The more he struggled, the greater was the grip of the noose.

Having been tied with the rope, Mahisha, the master of illusion played another trick on Durga just as she was going to kill him. Out of the buffalo came out a horrible lion pouncing at Durga. No sooner did Durga behead that lion with her sharp sword than he assumed his real form with a sword in his right hand charging at her.

He was not at all sacred of Durga as he took her to be an ordinary woman. It was his fatal mistake.

A terrible battle raged between Durga and Mahisha for a long time. Durga's lion roared violently killing many a demon. Durga with her divine weapons was instrumental in overpowering conceited Mahisha. She bound him with her arrows.

Somehow or the other the great illusory demon Mahisha freed himself from the bondage of Durga as the moment of his salvation had not yet dawned. Durga too was not in a mood to kill him before his destined hour. The boastful Mahisha with all sorts of tricks at his disposal kept on struggling against Durga. But how long could he endure against her!

Mahisha was, indeed, a great warrior like Ravana. Lord Rama had to try every technique of killing him. So was the case with Mahisha who was an adept in fighting. Moreover, he possessed immense physical strength. So Durga took sometime to deal with his deceitful tactics of warfare.
