Om Namah Shivaya |
It is said that Brahma was conceited that he was the Creator of the Universe. So, he thought, "None can be greater than I am. I am the first-born. Why should I accept anyone else as senior or greater? How can Vishnu claim to be the greatest one?" With this idea in his mind, he went to Vishnu and said, "O Vishnu! I am the greatest. I created you. Therefore, it is your duty to worship me. You ought to obey my orders."
This statement of Brahma enraged Vishnu but he did not react. He said, "Brahma! Remain within your limits. Don't you remember that you are from my navel. I am your son or you are my son? You must not forget that it is I who nurtures one and all and I am the Preserver. Hence, this is your duty to show respect to me and admit that I am the greatest. Neither of the two was prepared to agree on this point. Thus, they began to quarrel.
This dispute between them took a serious turn and they began to fight. The Gods were upset to find both the great Gods fighting like enemies. When the Gods found themselves helpless, they approached Shiva to get the dispute settled.
The Gods reached Shiva's place in great hurry. After praying and showing their respect to him they said, "O Shankar! Glory be to you. Brahma and Vishnu are fighting with each other over the issue who is greater of the two. Brahma says that he is the Creator of this Universe. Therefore, he is the greatest. Vishnu says that he has created Brahma from his naval. He also claims that he is the greatest because he is the nurturer and the preserver. Hence we pray to you to make them understand that quarrelling or fighting does not behove them. O Mahakal! Stop them otherwise some calamity is bound to fall us."
Shiva agreed to the Gods' prayer and proceeded to the place where Brahma and Vishnu were fighting a battle. He saw that the battle was in full fury. They were blind with rage as if they had lost their senses. It appeared that they were deprived of their sanity. Both of them had been, in the very beginning, assigned separate duties. Then what could be the problem? No doubt, they needed to be given a jolt. Shiva took the form of a huge pillar that is a Linga and placed himself between the two. The pillar was so huge and tall that its upper end was not visible. The lustre or light coming out of the pillar was so bright that Brahma and Vishnu were stunned. Their fight came to its end.
