Om Namah Shivaya |
Arjun shot an arrow at the boar which was hit in his mouth. At the same time, another arrow came from the opposite direction which hit the boar in the back. The boar died. Arjun was surprised as to who the other hunter was. The other arrow was shot by Shiva. He had come to test Arjuna's devotion and intensity of his faith in Shiva.
Both Shiva, in the guise of a hunter, and Arjun claimed to have shot the boar dead. They began fight. Shiva tried his weapon on Arjuna which proved ineffective. Arjun himself was astonished at the valour of the hunter. His arms too failed. When nothing happened, they began to fight hand to hand. Shiva was pleased at Arjuna's bravery and perseverance. He exposed his guise. Seeing Shiva before him, Arjun was dumb-founded. He was ashamed of his act of challenging his Lord whom he adored though he was not at fault.
Arjun, without losing any more time, fell at Shiva's feet. He begged his pardon. Shiva said, "Arjun! you have not committed any sin. I was testing you. You are my devotee. All the arms, you have hurled upon me, amount to offerings to me. I grant you the boon you wish to get."
Arjun submitted very politely, "O Lord! I wish to attain glory and virtuosity by your grace. This is the ambition I have in my heart." Shiva was pleased with Arjun. He granted him the fulfilment of his desire. In addition to this, he gifted Pashupat weapon to Arjun which made him invincible."
