The sacrifice is like loom with yarn stretched on every side, consisting of hundreds of rituals. See now the Fathers weaving at the loom, seated beside the wrap and shouting, weave forth, weave back. Here is the Man who stretches it and then unwinds the yarn. These are the pegs, fastened to the place of worship, the Saman hymns are the weaving shuttles. What was the design and the model, what the order? What were the wooden fender, what was the butter? What were the hymn, the meter and the chant when all the Gods sacrificed Purusha in worship? The Gayatri meter conjoined Agni, Savitar combined with meter Ushnish. Soma, the one lauded in hymns, joined Anushtup and Brihaspati was aided by Brihati. Varuna and Mitra took to Viraj. The Trishtup was Indra’s companion day by day, while the meter Jagati joined all the Gods together. So to this arrangement the seers conformed. This same arrangement was followed by the Seers and our Fathers. With my mind’s eye, I think I can see them all who first of all performed the sacrifice. They who were well versed in rites, meters, and hymns, were the Seven Godlike Seers of old. Now the sages follow the path traced out by the ancient Seers, they have taken up the reins like charioteers.
Near the tree decked in fine leaves where Yama drinks with Gods, he, the Father Yama, the lord of the home, attends with affection our ancient forefathers. I looked reluctantly on him who tended our ancient sires, on him who treads the path of evil and then longed to see him again.
Without seeing it you mounted, O child, the new, wheel-less car, shaped by your mind. It is one-poled yet it goes in every direction. This car which you have made to roll away from the priests, O child, was followed by a Saman chant, conveyed on a boat from here to there. Who was the father of the child? Who made the car roll away? Who can tell this to us today how the funeral gift was made? At the placing of the funeral gift, a flame at once appeared. It spread first in the front, and later a passage was contrived behind. Such is the seat of Yama, which is also called the home of Gods. Here ministrels play on flute for Yama, here he is magnified with songs.
The Sun with long loose of hair supports Agni, he upholds moisture, earth and heaven. He is verily light himself, the long-haired Muni. Girdled with the wind, the Munis wear garment soiled in ocher hue. They, the ascetics follow the swift wind’s course and walk the path the Gods have troden before. Possessed they declare, with our austerities we ride the winds as steeds. You mortal men below see our bodies alone. The Muni aids each God in hi work as a friend and associate. He flies through the realm of air, viewing the various forms of things. Ridden by the wind, friend of Vayu, urged by the Gods, the Muni is at home in both the seas, the eastern and western oceans. He walks the path of all the spirits, of Gandharvas, Apsaras and sylvan beasts. He knows their desires, he is their fair friend, he the long-haired Muni. The Vayu ha churned and prepared a drink for him, for him he pounds things most hard in their nature, the long-haired Muni has drunk with Rudra, from the cup.
