The beings are verily wise because of the greatness of Varuna, who has fixed in their stations the spacious earth and heaven, who has propped up on high the mighty vault of sky and the stars, who has spread out the earth in front of him. I ponder in my own heart and contemplate the question how again I may be united with Varuna? Would he accept my offerings without anger? When may I have his mercy? Fain to know my sin I ask myself, O Varuna, I seek the wise to ask them, all the sages give me the same one answer, “Surely the great God Varuna is displeased with you”. Then O Varuna, what has been my greatest transgression, that you would destroy your singer and friend? Tell me, O all-knowing God and possessing everything, that I sinless may quickly approach thee begging your forgiveness.
Free us from the sins of our fathers, and also from those we ourselves might have committed. O King, release us, as a thief is set free or a calf is loosed from its cord. The evil deed was done not deliberately, but it was wine, dice or anger that betrayed us, or the thoughtlessness, or the elder led the younger astray. Even in sleep evil-doing is not wholly removed. I am willing to serve you like a slave, you, the God, free from sin, inclined to anger. This most noble lord gives wisdom to the simple and leads on the learned to riches. O God Varuna, may these songs of praise reach you and lie within your heart. May it be will with us in peace and strife! Ever guard us, ye Gods, with your blessings!
Let me not pass yet, O King Varuna, to the house of clay, the grave have mercy, forgive me, mighty Lord! When I totter like wind-blown skin, O Thunderer, have mercy, forgive me, mighty lord! If through want of wits by ill-chance, I went astray, have mercy, forgive me, mighty lord! Thirst plagues thy worshipper, even when he stand amidst floods, have mercy, forgive me, mighty Lord! O Varuna, whatever offence we mortal men commit against the immortal Gods, or in thoughtlessness violate your laws, Oh, punish us not!
O Indra, O Agni, this noblest praise, of your comes out of my contemplative heart, as rain from the cloud. O Indra and Agni, listen to the singer’s call, enjoy his songs, fulfil, ye mighty Lords, his desires! O Agni, ye heroes, induce us not to sin, not to slander and violence! O Indra and Agni, we bow in reverence with hymns of praise. All the holy singers beg the twain for help and aid, and priests implore them to win strength. We learned men, eagerly laud you both, and offer sacred food, longing for wealth and success in sacrifice. O Indra, O Agni, come unto us with your favours, ye Gods, who conquer men. May not the wicked ever control us. Let not harm come unto us from any hostile man. O Gods, evermore potect us. O Indra and Agni, let us acquire whatever wealth in gold, in cattle or horses we beg of you.
Vishnu, the God of hundred splendours, strode three times over the earth in his high majesty. He the foremost of the Gods, stronger than the strongest, most illustrious in fame, lives for ever. With mighty steps strode Vishnu over the earth, being desirous give it to mankind for a home. In him the lowly and humble seek safety, he, the great God has given them this whole world. O all pervading God, clothed in rays of light, I a skilled devotee, ever extol thee with his oblation today. Yes, I the poor and weak, laud thee, the Mighty, who dwellest in the realm beyond this region. O God, whom thou proclaimest thyself as all-pervading, with what words can I speak of thy nature? Hide not this from us, nor keep it secret, since thou didst wear another guise in the battle. O God Vishnu, I accept thee with my lips as the fulfiller of all desires, be pleased to accept this my offering. May these my songs exalt thee. Do ye, preserve us, ever more with blessings!
