Population 825,000
The city derives its name from Thiru-anantha-puram – the city, or puram, of Anantha, the sacred serpent. Lord Padmanabha reclines on Ananta here in the famous Sri Padmanabhaswami Temple.

Many foreign tourists come to this city on their way to the beach town, Kovalam, which is 18 km away.

The town is built quadrilaterally around the Sri Padmanabhaswami Temple, which is oriented toward the four points of the compass, according to the Vedic scriptures.
