This city is famous for the Srirangam Temple in the middle of the Kaveri and the Rock Fort Temple. Along with Tiruparti, the Srirangam Temple is one of the most important Vishnu temples in South India. It is an important stop for a spiritual tour of South India.

Tiruchirappalli is 145 km northeast of Madurai and 320 km southwest of Madras.

Trichy is at the confluence of two major rivers - the Kaveri River and the Coolernon. Tiruchirappalli means "city of the three-headed demon." The city was supposed to be named in memory of a fight Lord Siva had with a three-headed demon named Trisiras.

The Pallavas and Pandyas fought over this town. In the 10th century the Chola gained control When the Chola dynasty feel, the Vijayanagara kingdom from Hampi took over.
