Air The nearest airport is in Madras, 71 km northeast.
Rail From Madras Beach Station one has to go via Chingleput (Chengalpattu). The two trains that go to Kanchipuram leave from Madras take about three hours. The train going back to Madras leave Kanchi in the morning. The train takes about twice as long as the bus. You can go to Kanchipuram via Arakkonam (Arakonam) from Madras Egmore Station. There are only two connections between Arakkonam to Kanchipuram.
Bus There are regular buses to and from Madras, Tirupati, Tiruttani, and Vellor. There are five direct buses a day to Mamallapuram. There are many buses to Chengalpattu, and from there you can get another bus to Mamallapuram. There are direct buses to Bangalore, Tiruchirappalli, (No 122, Srirangam, 7 hour) and Pondicherry. There are some buses that go direct to Tirupati. There are also buses to a small town near Tirupati, and them you have to get another bus from 20 minutes.
The bus stand is on the corner of Nellukkara St and Kossa St, in the center of town. Public buses for Madras leave from Parry's Corner by the Law Courts, where the Esplanade meets First Line Beach. Bus No 141 takes two hours to get here.
Others A convenient way to get around is to get a tourist taxi from Madras. Both ITDC and TTDC operate conducted tours from Madras to Tirukkalikundram, Kanchipuram, and Mamallapuram daily. This tour is very rushed.
