Air The airport is 8 km from the center of town. There are three Indian Airline flights weekly to Madras. There is a daily flight, except Sunday to Madurai. The India Airlines office is at the Railway Co-operative Mansion, Dindigul Rd opposite the Aristo Hotel. There are two flights a week to Sri Lanka on Air Lanka. The Air Lanka office is located at the Hotel Lakshmi, 3A Alexandria Rd.
Rail Ther are trains to Madras, Rameswaram, Chidambaram, Thanjavur, Madurai, and Tirunelveli. The Rock Fort Express and Cholan Express from Madras Egmore toTiruchirappalli take about six hours. To Madras are the Vaigai Express and Pallavan Exp. The Vaigai Express to Madurai takes 2 1/2 hours. To Bangalore there is the Bangalore Exp #6531. To Ramesvaram there is the Madras-Ramesvaram Exp #6101 and to Mangalore there is the #6531 Express.
To get from Tirupati to Tirchirappalli you can get the Tirupati to Madurai Express # 6799, which arrives the next morning.
Bus There are two bus stands right next to each other, the State Bus Stand and the Thiruvalluvar Bus Stand. At the State Bus Stand you buy your ticket from the conductor when the bus arrives. Express buses say "Fast" (in English) on the front of the bus. There are frequent buses to Thanjavur and Madurai. Bus No 1 brings you to the Srirangam Temple and the Red Fort.
The Thiruvalluvar buses, originating in Tiruchirappalli, can be booked in advance. There are buses to Nagercoil, Kanchipuram, Tirupati, and Bangalore. There are four super-deluxe buses to Madras from the Thiruvalluvar station.
You can also get private super-deluxe buses to Madras. Both KPN/RR Travels, outside the Hotel Anand, and AKM Travels, opposite the Hotel Tamil Nadu, offer this service.
