GANESHA AND MYTHOLOGY

Although Ganesha was created without the intervention of Shiva, after his resurrection with the head of the elephant Shiva also took pride about the part played by him in his resurrection and recognized him as his elder son. It may be noted that Ganesha had already come into existence before Karthikeya was created by Shiva without the intervention of Parvathy.

The above legend may read like an exaggerated account of a bickering between a Hindu Goddess and her spouse. But there is in it a wealth of spiritual information which may elude a casual reader or a sneering critic.

We have said that Ganesha is a prevedic Deity. In the prevedic period the society was matriarchal when people worshipped a Magna Mater symbolished and called in India by several names like Avvai, Ayi, Mayi, Maya, Ambal and by thousands of other names of which Parvathy is also one.

Before the Prophet of Islam became a monotheist about the middle of his life, Arabs also were worshipping the Magna Mater under different names like AI Umma, AI Uza, AI Lat and AI Manat besides the male Deity Shiva. The matriarchal system was the order of the society in Arabia and other neighbouring countries. In the early days of Christianity the "Holy Ghost" was considered as a mother. It is stated in one of the Apocryphas that Christ himself has spoken of "My mother the Holy Ghost".
