Hanuman Garhi temple is easily approachable from the rest of Ayodhya as it is situated right in the center of the town. The temple is a must visit during your trip to Ayodhya. The temple is an important site both in terms of religion as well as architecture and is thus hot among the tourists visiting Ayodhya. Hanuman Garhi is a massive structure in the shape of a four-sided fort with circular bastions at each corner.
Hanuman Garhi is actually a cave temple that is approachable by a flight of 76 steps. The manner in which this temple has been carved out is mesmerizing. One has to take the curved flight of stairs to reach this spot that is said to be once inhabited by Lord Hanuman. Lord Hanuman was the escort and guard of Lord Rama during and after his campaign against Lanka.
If one goes by the legend, Hanuman lived in this cave and guarded the Janambhoomi or Ramkot. The sanctum contains the statue of Mata Anjani holding infant Hanuman on her lap. History of the Hanuman Garhi, Ayodhya
According to popular legend, the place where the Hanuman Garhi now stands was inhabited by Hanuman. He used to live here to protect Janmabhoomi or Ramkot. This is so much for its mythological association. If we try and trace its history to more recent times we will know that the land for Hanuman Garhi was actually donated by the Nawab of Avadh. Later a temple was constructed by a Hindu courtier of the Nawab around the middle of the 10th century.

Ayodhya is just 6 km from the city of Faizabad. Ayodhya has good road connectivity with Lucknow (135 km), Varanasi (200 km), Allahabad (165 km) and Gorakhpur.

Good rail network connects Ayodhya directly with Lucknow(3 Hrs.) and Varanasi(4 Hrs.)
