Guidelines for Surya Namaskar
Limitations
There are no limitations as far
as age is concerned. Surya Namaskara can be practised beneficially throughout
all stages of growth, maturity and old age. However, elderly people are
advised to avoid over exertion. As a rule children under 8 years of age,
if they can perform Surya Namaskara, usually do not need it.
Surya Namaskara should not be practised by
people with high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, or those who
have had a stroke, as it may overstimulate or damage a weak heart of blood
vessel system. Not should it be practised in cases of hernia or intestinal
tuberculosis.
People with spinal problems should consult
a medical expert before commencing Surya Namaskara. Although many spinal
problems can be alleviated through this practice, in some cases, such
as slipped disc and sciatica, a program of other yoga asanas is more beneficial.
Most women can benefit by practicing Surya
Namaskara, even during menstruation. However, those with heavy or painful
periods may feel, as a precaution, not to practise at this time. During
pregnancy, Surya Namaskare can be practised until the beginning of the
12th week. Following childbirth, it may be gradually commenced
for retaining of the uterine muscles approximately 40 days after delivery.
The most important point to keep in mind,
however, is not to strain. Surya Namaskara teaches us to tune in with
our own capabilities and limitations. With time and practice, you will
find these limitations receding. By developing a sensitivity to the body,
we can use Surya Namaskara to greatly increase our awareness, health,
and well being.
