SURYA NAMASKARA

Therapeutic Principles

Surya Namaskara in therapy
In the final analysis we see that Surya Namaskara acts to rebalance the energies of mind and body, depending on how we perform it. This knowledge allows us to modulate our body's energies according to need.

It is important for anyone practising Surya Namaskara, but especially so in therapy, to perform each stage of the practice accurately before moving on to the next. In the therapeutic situation it is rarely necessary to progress onto chakra awareness or mantra repetition. These constitute the spiritual side that we undertake when our body is healed and strengthened by asana and pranayama.

When practising Surya Namaskara for its therapeutic benefits it is wise to proceed slowly, whether pingala or ida is predominant. In this situation we may take 2, 3 even more breaths during each asana, coordinating movement with breath, taking our time to develop awareness of the body and its limitations and
the effects of breath on its inner functioning. An ida dominant individual would then aim to slowly increase the number of rounds and speed them up. A pingala dominant type would aim at maintaining or even showing his practice and doing only a few rounds. Once his health returns he would speed up his practice. Once again, guidance, preferably in an ashram environment, is essential if the body is to once again function like a well-tuned machine.
