Lord Rama was born and had many of His pastimes here. It is a very holy city and is an important pilgrimage site. It is said to have once had a perimeter of 96 miles and was the capital of Koshala. It is on the banks of the Gogra (Ghaghara or Saryu) River, bathing in which is supposed to destroy even the sin of killing a Brahmin.
Ayodhya is 6 km from the town of Faizabad, about 150 km due east of Lucknow, and 200 km northwest of Varanasi.
