Udaipur has attractive landscaped gardens and beautiful lakes. The city is about 2000 feet (610 m) above sea level. The city palace, which is a popular tourist site, is located high over the waters of Lake Pichola. This city is one of the most popular cities in India with foreign tourists. The wall surrounding the old city has five gates with iron spikes on them to protect against elephant attacks.

Udaipur was named after Maharaja Udai Singh, who founded the city in the middle of the sixteenth century. The Maharaja of Udaipur is the highest-ranked Rajput ruler. The Maharaja is known as the "Sun King" and has the emblem of the sun on his standard.

Udaipur is the closest major city to Nathdwar, where the Sri Nathji Deity is located.
