The closest airport is in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), a half hour from Kovalam.
Bus
Usually the way to get here is to go to Trivandrum first. From Trivandrum buses depart every 40 minutes from the Fort Bus Depot, Platform 19 (bus No. 9D or No.111). You can also get a shared taxi here . The bus stand in Kovalam is on the main road by the Ashok Resort, in the northern part of town. You can get an auto-rickshaw to or from Trivandrum.
There are direct buses to Kanniyakumari, Ernakulam, and Quilon. If you are going to Madurai, you can get a bus to Nagercoil that takes two hours and from there get one of the regular buses to Madurai. This is better than going to Thiruvananthapuram to get the bus to Madurai, as many of the buses from Thiruvananthapuram to Madurai go through Nagercoil anyway. Plus it is easy to get a bus to Madurai from Nagercoil, but not from Thiruvananthapuram.
