Thanjavur was the capital of the Chola Empire from the 8th to the 13th century. The Chola dynasty controlled a good part of South India and Sri Lanka. They celebrated many of their victories by constructing a temple, financed by the defeated party. There are over 70 temples in Thanjavur, the most important being the famous Brihadeeswara Temple. Thanjavur is situated halfway between Tirchirappalli (60 km) and the coast. It is 114 km south of Chidambram and 334 km south of Madras.
At Tirukandiyur, 10 km from Thanjavur, is a temple dedicated to Lord Brahma.
