Kumbakonam is on the bank of the Kaveri River, 68 km southwest of Chidambaram and 311 km south of Madras.

Train
The railway station is just east of the Mahamaham Tank, about 2 km from the main temple area. There are trains to Madras (8 hr) Chengalpattu (6 1/2 hr) Trichy, Chidambaram, and Thanjavur. There is a good train to Madras which takes about 8 hours.

Bus
There are regular buses to Chidambaram, Tirchirappalli (4 hrs) Madras, Thanjavur and Bangalore. The bus station is north of the Mahamaham Tank, southeast of the center of town, about a ten-minute motor rickshaw ride from the main temple area. Buses depart to Thanjavur and Gangaikondacholapuram every few minutes.
