So she requested her husband also to obtain a loan from him and
start business afresh. The lucky hand of the lender may also bring
us fortune, she said.
Subbi Setty had never before approached any body for help. He
had been so far only a giver of benefits and not a receiver at all.
Yet, circumstances willed it otherise. He thought it was God's will
that he should go and seek a loan from Badekhan. Hence he accepted
his wife's suggestion and !he next morning after normal routine
and prayers he went to Badekhan's residence. While on his way he
prayed Lord Venkataramana to bless success in hi, attempt.
On reaching Badekhan's house) Subbi Setty introduced himself as
one time sound business man residing in the near by Bazaar street
and that as ill luck would have it, his business fell and he became
poor. He therefore requested him for a loan of two thousand rupees
to be repaid as' early as possible together with interest at 9 per
cent, to enable him to !tart business afresh.
Subbi Setty's appearance and appeal won Badekhan's confidence.
He took pity on him and helped him with the sum requested. Subbi
Setty wrote a primissory note and -took the amount. He thanked Badekhan
for his help and returned home happily.
On reaching home, he placed the money before Lord Venkataramana's
picture and sought His blessings. On an auspicious day he started
business. By God's grance the business soon picked up and Setti
made a lot of money and regained his lost status. He attributed
his success only to the blessings of the Almighty. Both Setty and
his wife continued their unstinted devotion to the Lord. Achamamba
was also helping her husband in his business. They both led a happy
life.
However, they had no children. They were therefore worried. They
sincerely prayed that they may be blessed with a child. God was
kind to them. Their request was granted. Soon Achamamba became pregnant
and gave birth to a male child. Since he was born out of the boon
of Sri Venkataramana .of the Seven Hills, the child was named after
the Lord and brought up affectionately.
One day Badekhan was passing through the Bazaar street. He then
remembered that Subbi Setty was residing in that street So he went
to the Setty's house. That was a Saturday. Setty was worshipping
Lord Venkataramana at that time. Achamamba offered Badekhan a seat.
After aradhana to the Lord, Setty came to Badekhan and was closetted
with himfor sometime. Meanwhile Achamamba brought naivedyam-(offering
to God) comprising of Sweet pongal, Sugar candy, Betal etc. and
gave it to Badekhan.
Subbi Setty said, "Khanjee, you were kind enough to give
me a loan of Rs.,2000/- (Rupees Two Thousand). Your good heart and
lucky hand brought me fortune and helped me improve my business
and today I am able to repay your money with interest So saying,
he paid the Saheb 200 ten rupee notes and 36 five rupee notes in
full settlement of principal and interest. He further said that
he was always indebted to him for his timely help and wished that
God should always bless him.
Badekhan received the money and kept it in his coat pocket. He
told Setty, ”Dear friend, I did not come here with the intention
of receiving money from you. So I have not brought the Bond you
signed. I will however, return it to-morrow." He took leave
of Setty and started home. While going he jocularly remarked, "if
suppose I do not return the Bond, who will bear witness for the
repayment of money by you?" Setty unhesitatingly said, pointing
out to the picture of Lord Venkataramana, ”Here is my Lord
witnessing the payment." So saying, he saluted the Lord.
This irritated Badekhan. He grew wild. U What non-sense do you
talk? You owe your position to me. I only lent you money. Yet you
show this picture and say it is your Lord. Is that picture a God?
How do you expect a picture to speak witness?" he cried. In
his expectation, Setty was a fool. He said- to himself "let
me see how a picture can speak as a witness. I will teach him a
lesson. I take this as a challenge. I will challenge him in a court
of law." He then walked off proudly. On reaching home, Badekhan
removed his coat, covered it round his copy of the' Koran '. his
religious book and kept it in his shelf. The amount was therefore
not credited to Setty's account in his books.
